I'm sure this belongs in the General Boating forum, but it's a question I would ask dockside... Move it as you deem necessary oh great Mods.. :)

What size anchor rode (thickness) should I use for a 22' boat, with a weight of approx. 4500lbs? I have 200' of 3/8", but not sure if that's the proper size. Thanks.

Beefer,

If I were you, I wouldn't go with less than 1/2" diameter anchor line for your size and weight boat. While 3/8" line might hold your boat, it will be stressed to its max if you anchor in any kind of rough seas and any kind of fraying will certainly weaken it that much more. Just my 2 cents.

According to Boat U.S. and I believe Chapman's, a 3/8 " diameter anchor line is appropriate for a 20- 30 foot boat.

1/2" line would be much easier on the hands when pulling up the anchor but would be heaver and take up more locker space if that's any concern.
I have a 20' piece of 1/2" mooring line but don't like it, can only get one wrap around the cleat maybe two I can't remember now but there's something about it I don't like.

Definitely 1/2" if your cleats can handle it. That's what I used on my 23 footer.
BTW, you only have to wrap the cleat once, turning the bitter end under.

3 strand nylon is the best choice for anchor lines.

Cut and pasted:

"Use nylon rope only. Nylon rope is strong, light, easy to handle, and elastic, the latter a most desirable characteristic in an anchor rode. Three-strand offers the dual advantages of greater elasticity and lower cost, but where the anchor line will be fed through a deck pipe for stowage, the added flexibility of braided nylon can make it a better choice. cleats, pretty much mandate diameter of rope used. smaller, can break and set boat adrift, larger will not hold boat and set it adrift. My o.2

Re: Anchor Line Thickness

3/8" is fine for your boat, even in bad weather. (Unless you need more than we used for 27 registered tons.)
