Anyone use an Anchor roller for a 8lb Anchor? Seems whenever I have my mate (wife) deploy or weigh the anchor the gunnel takes a beeting. Problem is I already have a trolling motor mounted on the bow (1850 Crestliner SF) and I will need to install the Roller slightly off the starbord side.

What do you think?

Re: Anchor Roller

I would think that it would work while mounted off to the side. I have one on my boat and it's great. I also have a ltach that hooks onto the chain to secure the anchor which I don't like so much because it takes too long to undo. It's much easier just to tie the line to a cleat.

Re: Anchor Roller

Thanx but if the Rode contains 4-6 feet of chain how do you secure the anchor to the cleat? Do you leave the anchor at the end of the roller while running?

Re: Anchor Roller

On my boat there's a compartment in the bow that's used to store the anchor line. I have a cleat in there. (I only have about 3-4 feet of chain) The chain is only rubbing on wood, not fiberglass, so it's no big deal if it gets a little chewed up.
You may also be able to mount a cleat further back down the gunnel on the side that you mounted the roller on. That way it would be the same height as the roller, and the chain wouldn't be contacting your boat at all.

Re: Anchor Roller

If the anchor roller is installed to the side the boat may "yaw" (move from side to side) while anchored if there is a significant wind or current. A few inches should be OK, more could be a problem. Can the trolling motor be moved to allow the anchor roller to be mounted on the boat's center line?

The anchor can remain on the roller when not in use if it and the rode can be secured. There are several styles of chain retaining devices available at marine centers. I use one. I clip a bunge cord between the anchor and bow rail to control rattling.

If you leave the anchor on the roller when the boat is in operation it's important to have it or the rode well secured as inadvertent anchor deployement at speed could have serious consequenses.

Re: Anchor Roller

rwidman

The troll motor is directlu off the bow the anchor will be next to it so it will be approx. 4 inches off center at about 10 degrees off center.

Suppose I could move the troll moter but I hate to add holes in the gunwale.
