Anchoring off Islands

Hi, we live in Maine and there is some great little islands that we'd like to explore and camp out overnight. I'm wondering what the best way to anchor the boat (17' tri-hull) for an overnight stay on an island. Some of them are hard to beach at because of rocks and other obstacles. I was thinking of anchoring a few yards out and rowing the family and gear in on a good durable inflatable boat. I just don't want to wake up to any unpleasant surprise! Any help or tips on the best way to safely anchor overnight would be greatly appreciated. Love this forum!

I tie off to a tree and throwout a stern anchor.
When I wake up the next morning I know I'm still going to be at the island. :)

Oh by the way, I'm on a inland lake..:)

Does the water go up or dowm during the enening?? Here in the west its constanly change from day to day. So its best to off load gear on the bank set up camp them doudle anchor. Stern and bow in 10 to 15 foot water. Them tie off on the bank if you can. That's just rule of thumb for me. Then you guessed it swim to the bank. Better safe than sorry.

I've been in the sorry position.
It's a nice pep up in the evening and vert nice wake up in the morniing with a life vest summo style...

When we are out camping over night, it is always bow out, just in case the lake kicks up.
Tie your stern off to a tree or rock if available.

"As long as your anchor is well set",
You could bring yourself into about 3-4 feet of depth at the stern.

just remember that the bow and stern anchor points must be well set.

HAVE FUN :)

i have slept over fort gourges island a few times, what i do is time the tide, the rocks around there are just not worth risking an over night tie up, imo , one slip of the anchor and well you know. i beach the boat, stay over night and make sure i am up for the incoming tide and take off, casco bay is nice to take pleasure trips :)

Make sure you have good bilge pmp with a float switch. Tri's are good about taking water of the bow.

Cross linking to another boating site doesn't go well on here. :)

His boat hasn't been on the water in over 7yrs..

Hey what about using an "Anchor Buddy"? Anyone have any experience with these?

My buddy and I used to beach his Ranger fish and ski on islands. We would carry a large old tire and beach the boat on that, then tie her up. Never had any issues, and it's a very heavily trafficked lake, so lots of large wakes. Now, I'm talking about a Corps impoundment, so we did not have to deal with tides.

When you play out the anchor rode, make sure you have allowed quite a bit extra for any incoming tide. A boat anchored well at low tide may be gone come high tide.

If you can get an additional line to the beach area of your campsite, tie that sucker to a tree. The tree should be there in the morning.
