I bought a used 18' Sea Ray 175 series BR.
What are the guidelines for choosing the correct type of anchor?

boat that small? just get a medium sized pointy tip slip anchor, a length of chain for the rode...and 100ft of anchor rope.....
mebbe get 2, great for holding your position when you beached or are near shore...good for alot of different underwater bottoms...will tear up a coral reef though! so great for sand and med soft bottoms...prob wouldnt hold you in muck or rocks too good.....

Welcome to Iboats!
ps when I say RODE....put the chain on the slip ring at the anchor...then attach the rope to the tip of the chain...so its Anchor/Chain/Rope in a continuous line...

...it helps weigh the tip down so when you pull on the rope, it digs in good...otherwise it can skate along the surface of the bottom sand or gravel....helps it to DIG IN :)

to remove the anchor you untie the line from your boat, get your boat ABOVE the anchor, and pull straight up....give it a shake to remove muck...stow it away...fun fun!

check out these @ the Iboats store for instance....:D

I've learned the hard way... When preparing a anchor don't skimp to much on rope and chain. These are just as important if not more important than the anchor it's self. If you think you will be fine with 50' of rope go ahead and get 100'. Get 5'-6' of chain and don't buy some wimpy chain/rope. You won't need anything super heavy duty but you won't regret going with something heavier than the bare min. As mentioned the chanin adds weight but it also protects your rope. Also the big thing is the amount of rope you let out. I drop my whole 100' even if I'm only in 20' and still many would drop more than that. Saw a guy lest week on his new Tahoe that kept coming towards me then pulling his anchor, backing up and then dropping it again. He had a huge anchor but the line was straight up and down. I told him he needs to let more line out. He didn't get it at all. We where in 15-20' water and he only had 25' rope with no chain or anything else. The anchor as you can imangine did nothing.

Lots of people mis-understand the concepts of anchoring. They think it's the weight of the anchor that does it, and don't understand the techniques.
I see people tying off to the stearn all the time at our lake. Or just plunking straight down and not setting at all, or letting out enough line.
Excellent newbie question to ask!

Get a danforth/fluke style anchor. 5-6 lbs. The chain should be about 6 feet in length and be made with 1/4 inch links.
