This is just insanity at it's best. Union plumbers help raise cable cost.

A developer wanted to install waterless urinals in a high rise being built in Philly. The plumbers union shut down the job till they got there way, to install all the pipeing needed to run conventional urinals, even though they will not be used.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A waterless-urinals agreement is in the can, and that means that the Comcast Center will be able to install the environmentally friendly basins in its new headquarters, a spokesman for Mayor Street announced last night.

Street brokered the complex deal between the developer, Liberty Property Trust, and Plumbers Union Local 690, with support from State Sen. Vincent J. Fumo after the potty standoff was made public in The Inquirer and became a cause celebre for the city's environmental groups.

The agreement clears the way for Liberty to install 116 no-flush urinals in the men's rooms at the 58-story Comcast Center, and increases the chances that the 975-foot skyscraper will earn the title of America's tallest green building.

Liberty, however, was forced to accept a long list of conditions to open the way for the green devices. Most significantly, it agreed to install standard water lines with the urinals, although they are unnecessary and will not be connected. The plumbers contend this is a backup measure, in case the urinals don't work.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1609587/posts

Sound like a plan to simple discredit a trade union that has probable installed more urinals than the designers and the reporters combined

I dont care how many urinals the union has installed. Why run the pipe to them if it is not needed. Looks to me like the plumbers union is discrediting itself.

Shades of Featherbedding which in part almost drove the railroads into oblivion. A socialist program by any other name.....

The USSR kept the wringer washing machine factories producing at full tilt, clear into the eighties. Even the Ruskies wouldn't buy them. Where is the USSR now?

Reminds me from when I was a kid ('60s), working on new housing tracts in CA. The unions wouldn't allow homes to be painted by airless sprayers. Sooooo, the painting contractors would come out and paint on the weekends when the union inspectors wouldn't work. The unions would send light aircraft over the jobsites, on the weekends, to see if anyone was working. The painters would park in the garages and always run inside if they heard any small planes.

What a wonderfull partner to have in economic growth. All supported by the Party of PW and Rolmops.

BTW, I'd like to know how 'waterless urinals' work. I smell a ....... :D

i've installed several waterless urinals on various projects. i was surprised myself, but they actually work and don't smell. small chemical gas trap keeps odors away.

Ok, what is Blue Seal?
and I still don't see how you would not get urine smell from it sitting, unrinsed, on the exposed surface of the urinal.

Boom- its a liquid that is lighter than urine and floats to the top, sealing the urin completely from the atmosphere.

Some of the Blueseal liquid needs to be added each month as part of maintainence.

I'll bet those extra pipes never get installed, but they get charged for them, probably double.

First I ever hear of 'Waterless urinal'. Could use some of it in our office building. It is a cool idea, save water. I am all for it.

Re: And you wonder why cost are up.

We used to keep one in the outbuildings for years. A couple of quarts of used motor oil in a five gallon bucket. Take a wizz and the oil would cover it up and the smell. Those days are long gone. Just an improvement on an old concept.
