annoying tilt/trim problem

The trim up function on the switch of my Commander 4000 ('02 Maxum) has suddenly quit working. I have to use the trailer up function to trim the drive while underway (It's a 3-position switch - 2 positions up, 1 down). After searching the forums I've concluded that the switch is bad or the wire has pulled loose inside the handle. Is this a repair that a weekend novice like me can handle?

Welcome to iboats Corky.<br /><br />Most TNT switches if busted on the inside are non reparable. If a wire pulled lose, ya' may be able to resolder it on if yer careful. The biggest problem you may have is just getting to it. I would recommend a service manual before you charge into the controls. With the manual you should have no problem.

Re: annoying tilt/trim problem

I just had the same problem with my tilt switch..<br /><br />In my case, the switch just needed a good flush out with CRC and it started working again.. musta been a bit of dirt or currosion on the contacs...<br /><br />happened at a very inoportune time for me... cos I had just hit a small rock and would dearly have loved to trim the motor out of the water a bit..<br /><br />because I don't have the switch on the motor as well, I was unable to.. and ended up losing a prob blade to the next rock.. so now I'm putting a second switch up the back of the boat as well.<br /><br />rgds<br /><br />Franki

hello<br /> if this is a mercruiser then test the trim limit switch on the port side of the gimbal ring.<br /> it fails with amazing regularity and is terrible to replace.<br /> hope its just a handle switch.<br /> good luck and keep posting

Remove the control and replace the switch. Jerry rigging will only be a temp. fix. Not that expensive to replace..

I tested the handle switch first; it was fine. Took the cover off of the limit switch and found rust and corrosion. Those limit switches aren't exactly water-tight!!
