Anode bolt access hole plug

I know some will think this a dumb question but is the plug that covers the access hole to get to the anode bolt important? Changed the anodes on my B3 yesterday and plug was missing.

most that willl happen is that it fills with mud

the little plastic plug that the fish swim off with when it falls off? as BD stated, worst that will happen is the cavity fills with crud
