Another Automotive Oil Question

My 2003 Z71 has a 5.3 liter engine. THe book calls for 5w30 oil year round. I normally change the oil in all my vehicles but theres times I send them to a place to be changed when I dont have time. This place always uses 10w30. I always check my oil when I fill up with gas and I've noticed that this engine doesn't get the 5w30 as dirty as quickly as it does when its running 10w30 oil.

Anybody care to take a stab at this one?

Re: Another Automotive Oil Question

Ive never been able to figure why different oils seem to darken, (Not necasarily dirtier), faster than other oils. It may be just a different brand that he uses. The same brand you use in a 10W-30 may stay lighter longer.

I would just use Mobil1 5W-30 and change it at about 7,500 miles.

Re: Another Automotive Oil Question

We both use Castrol and the 10w30 definately darkens faster than the 5w30.

5w-30 is what I use in my Chevys. I may even try 5w-20 in my 97 3.1 to see if helps quiet the morning piston slap.

Re: Another Automotive Oil Question

I quit using Castrol just for that reason. Went back to Valvoline. I think my motors are happier now. :p
