Another either/or question

We are new to boating and are looking at a 1999 192 BR Crownline or a 2002 brand new never used Bayliner deck boat. Both have 220 hp V8 engines.
My husband likes the Crownline alittle better and I like the deckboat, both boats will fit our needs but we are somewhat concerned with the weight capacity of the BR @ alittle over 1100 lbs. Most of our friends and family are alittle on the chunky side. ;)
I guess my question is which one is more reliable (Ive read bad things on here about Bayliners),and which one is safest for a newby. It seems for a deckboat the Bayliner has a deeper V hull than other deckboats. The new deckboat is 4K more than the Crownline.

you should be planning a sea trial in each boat.
how does a 2002 not get used in three years?

It came from a boat dealership that went out of business, the current dealership bought it for bottom dollar. We intend on taking both out for a test drive.

The Crown 192 should be Ok for 5 adults plus a couple of kids. More than than and the deckboat would offer a little more room. "Reliability" will be more a matter of the condition of these specific boats than their brands. Safety is a wash, though the smaller bowrider will be a tiny smidge easier to learn to trailer, etc.

In very general terms the bowrider makes a much better ski and water sports boat while the Bayliner 2159 is slightly better for cruising/entertaining.

Kelly Cook

Another coupla points . . . If you are worried about a small boat with big people I recommend that either one should have adjustable trim tabs. This way you can help the boat run flat when three of the larger friends decide to sit on one side ;) Safer that way. Also, I don't usually like deck boats unless they are a true deep-V hull, with that said, a more traditional deck boat hull will be more stable from side to side and may actually be better for the heavier loads. I would want to know the deadrise spec. If you boat in rough water, go with the one that has the higher deadrise. If not, get the roomier and possibly flatter riding deck style.

People often ask which is the more reliable boat, which is not really a good boat question IMHO. This is more of an engine/drive combo, along with a wiring issue. So if they are wired well and run any of the newest drive combos, reliability should be pretty equal i.e. they will start and get you home. On the other hand, hardware quality throughout the boat is a big issue; hinges, seat mounts, hatches etc. will cause lots of little and sometimes big headaches down the trail.

My .02 . . . Good luck!!

L .Wife got that part correct. Deadrise on the Bayliner 2159 deckboat is 20 deg. Whereas on the Crownline 192 bowrider deadrise is 16 deg. Which is why I tried to make the point that the Crownline would be a much better choice for watersports.

Kelly

Funny, but this is why I vote for the Bayliner if you don't have brand name-itis. The Bayliner will be much more comfortable. with or without a load. Possibly a little rollier side-to-side than the Crownline, but it will handle chop etc. much better. Don't forget the adjustable trim tabs . . .

Overall quality and materials of the Crownline would be far superior to the Bayliner. The resale would also be much better.Charlie

Thank you for yalls help. I found out exactly what I wanted to know especially about that deadrise issue. We will probably go with the deck boat.

Re: Another either/or question

More deadrise is not always better. If it was then all boats would be sporting 24 degrees of deadrise. Drawbacks to high deadrise include higher fuel consumption, greater bow rise during the hole shot, and higher minimum planing speed. The real question is whether a given boat has enough bowrise for the conditions it will be operated under. Not all of us need to tear across tough water at high speeds.

Kelly
