Good day, Have another question regarding gas tank. My 15 hp Force (by Merc) came with a Qwicksilver gas tank and it has been noisy ever since I got it ... When motor is shut off while fishing there is a continuous tic-tic tic-tic from the tank gauge when the boat rocks even mildly. Soooo today I took a chance (not being a mecanic) and screwed off the part that goes inside the tank and also hold the rod and floating unit that hooks up to the tank gauge only to find the end part is a plastic ball and knocks at the bottom of the tank continuously. Soooo I took it off and replaced it with a wine bottle cork as I saw my OMC tank gauge had a cork at the end of the gauge rod. Put it all back together and the gauge works well and the tic-tic noise is gone.
Question: is there any chance that a wine bottle cork could melt or break appart by sitting in gasoline ?? (not knowing if my OMC tank cork would be a different animal.)
Thank you.

Re: Another gas tank question ???

Older tanks were fitted with a lacquored cork. The ethanol fuel has "fixed" most of those because the alcohol dissolves the coating, then the cork soak up the gas and sinks, thus you get empty tank readings all the time.

I'm sure yours will go just that much faster.

The fix is to use a neoprene rubber carb float that is alcohol resistant.
