Another Gear Case Oil Question

Has anyone used Mystic4 for a Type-C oil? The container states, replaces type C, but goes into some gear assemblies need transmission fluid. Everything I have read on this forum states use Type-C.

It's for my 1972 Johnson 50hp. hydroelectric. There's different oils that list as Type-C, ones sold as Type-C and ones that say replace Type-C. The type-C is the purpose of the oil pump, no? Am I missing something or did I assume type-C being thinner, but it's really thicker?

Lol, the manufacturer recommends Type-C and the Mystic says for use where Type-C is required.

Stay away from that stuff, It claims to be Type C, but then it says not to use it in Electric Shift units. OMC/BRP make an oil that is the correct type. It is now called Precision Blend. Guaranteed to be the correct stuff

Confusion results because back in "The Day", Type C was used in all motors, electric shift or not. So, an oil could "replace Type C" in manual shift motors, but not in electric shift.

And Type C was the only gear oil OMC marketed in the 60s and early 70s, until the V6s came out in 75

Believe it's BRP Premium Blend for electric cases. Bottle of whatever you buy should specify that it's for electric gear cases, if that's what you need, and should have the viscosity of ATF (i.e,, thin).

I found some labeled Type-C. I still have to sandblast the housing. There's pin holes in the welds that need JB-Weld and sanded.

Read the back of the Mystic bottle -- if I read correctly, it tells you it's for gear cases using 90w or 80w oil. That would be for mechanical shift gear cases.

Good luck with the restoration!

I didn't get a good photo. It lists to use in place of those two and Type-C. It's a thick oil. I put some in and drained it out.
