Since there are so many people that come to this board, wanting to buy and sell motors and parts, why dont you add an auction to this site? Something like Ebay or Yahoo auctions, charge an insertion and final value fee? You could literally make hundreds of thousands of dollars. This site is without doubt the largest grouping of boat owners around. You could make a killing. I could go through the posts and find atleast 100 people needing a part or wanting to sell a motor or part. Just something to think about.

Good idea. But it would have to be way cheaper than ebay for selling stuff. Ebay makes more than the seller does!!
I'll still buy from ebay, but will never sell there again.

Re: Another idea for Admin5

Hi Nathan. Interesting that you would suggest the idea of an ebay-type auction or some other form of "buy-sell" location on iboats.com. We get about 500 to 1,000 emails a day, on average, from people all over the USA looking to buy boating-related stuff of all kinds. So we also have been thinking and talking about this idea and are seriously considering starting something to help people to buy and sell their other "stuff", meaning all the other stuff that we all seem to collect over the years as fishermen, boaters, divers, sailors, and outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen besides our primary/only boat or motor.

For the newer and/or more expensive boats and motors we already have our Classifieds Section where people can list their boat or motor for sale...with up to 3 pictures and all the words/data/information they want to use...for the one-time fee of just $39.95. (For a little more money they can also add a LOT more pictures if they want.) These classified ads are live on all our several hundred boating-related web sites (plus, at no extra cost through partnerships we have, we place these classified ads onto Yahoo's site, Overton's web site and Trailer Boats Magazine's web site, for up to 6 months or until the boat or motor sells, whichever comes first. It is NOT uncommon for someone to list their boat with us and get up to 800 people viewing their ad in a matter of days, and sell it within a week or so! Some obviously take longer to sell based on price, location and condition of the boat...and how good the pictures of the boat look online.

Anyway, our thinking is that there are a LOT of boats that are not worth a few thousand dollars or more, but may be worth a few hundred dollars. Maybe we should have a place on our sites where people can list those (with pictures, etc, if they want) for something like just $9.95 or $14.95. For other things that people want to sell for just $25 or $50 dollars, maybe we would need to charge just $4.95. At some point when the item is sold for too little money, the cost to us of handling and processing the person's credit card, etc. makes it not profitable for us to get involved at all. At that point we ask ourselves whether it is even worth it to charge anything at all for something that will sell for just $4.00? At some minimum point of value maybe we should just say, "You guys and gals buy and sell the really cheap stuff (with some dollar minimum) among yourselves and we will just let you use our online services to place the items into the iboats.com network of sites and let people find those items online...free of charge.

Now that we are getting over 3 million individual user sessions (people) every MONTH visiting our network of boating-related web sites, we think that we have enough people visiting us to make something like what we are talking about here work rather well.

I have rambled on enough. I'd REALLY like to get input from as many of you GREAT Forum Members as possible on this topic...since it would be primarily designed to be a benefit to and serve your needs. So, let me know your thoughts on this subject, and thanks again Nathan for the suggestion.

BV

BV,

I think we have two different ideas going on here.

1. I believe some folks just want a, for the lack of a better term, SWAP MART. I believe, they would like to see this as a free (no charge) topic added to the current board.

2. Some others, I believe, are interested in a true ebay style auction site. That type of undertaking would have to be a on a fee basis for you to make it feasable.

BV, when you said, "Anyway, our thinking is that there are a LOT of boats that are not worth a few thousand dollars or more, but may be worth a few hundred dollars. Maybe we should have a place on our sites where people can list those (with pictures, etc, if they want) for something like just $9.95 or $14.95. For other things that people want to sell for just $25 or $50 dollars, maybe we ---", personally, I think this plan would werk beyond yer wildest expectations. Of course, I could be wrong :D If I had the means and connections you had, perhaps I would try it, as you're halfway 'geared-up' to start with.

Go for it

Re: Another idea for Admin5

12Footer, I am surprised you had a bad experiance with selling on ebay. My thinking is just the opposite of yours I think ebay is a great place to sell. I always make a lot more profit from ebay then any other way to sell. I think alot of stuff brings more than its worth, so in turn I would have to say its not the best place to buy. I think the fees are not to bad. I recently sold a bike for 10,000 and it only cost me 50.81. Cant get much cheaper than that. Although I could see where the really cheap 2 and 3 dollar items might be hard to make much at all on unless you have alot of it for sale. JMHO
Nathan I think you got a good idea there.

Wonderful idea. I think the swapping style would go over best. There are plenty of ways to sell newish boats and motors. But there is a need for a gathering place for us who collect little odds and ends that we know someone, somewhere, is dying to get their hands on. We all find ourselves in that situation, wouldnt it be great to have a place that you know you can always turn to? Id love to see something come of this, good idear!
Craig

Heres my opinions,
Auctions: If i'm selling I want the exposure of ebays # to get the most for my Items If I'm buying It would proabably be cheaper here. Leave the auctions to the pros.

On the Bargian Boats: I think you have a winner there.

On the Swap-Meet: boating related items that do not cut into your meat and potatoes for the people who do not want to auction why not? If you use for example a used Manuel that you carry new how many are you going to get here, proabably a few but the fact remains you would still take a profit and so long as it is not someone with a truckload it should not affect the books to bad. I would think it would be a nice sideline and a compliament to your site.

I sell stuff on E-Bay all the time!

Yea, they have to make their money too, but I don't complain.

Think of this...How much would it cost to place an ad in your local newspaper? And how many people do you think the ad will be exposed to?

Not nearly the amount as EBay.

Just think of the insert/final value fee as part of it. You can make some of it back with shipping, but I don't.

I don't buy from a seller who makes profit on shipping. I don't care how good the deal is. They are a thief if they jack the shipping charges up.

I'm curious why you don't want to sell. Do you mind telling us?

My boat project is about 80% funded by EBay sales. Can't beat it (IMHO)And it's all Uncle Sam free (the best part)!

I think it would be a great idea to set up an auction here, but from what I've noticed...Most of us on this forum are 'good 'ol boys' and would rather just swap, trade, or send the green honestly.

H.

Re: Another idea for Admin5

The idea of it was not to buy a new or higher priced boat, iboats has a classified section for that.

What I'm saying is that I may need a pull starter for a 1956 Evinrude or whatever, I gaurantee that there is someone here that has one, and they dont want to spend 19.95 to advertise it in the classified section.

It would be a place for people to sell odds and ends for motors, older motors, and cheaper boats, or for someone to post that they need something for a motor or whatever.

It is not worth paying 19.95 to put an ad in the classified section for a Jon Boat that is only worth $100.

The idea of doing it auction format is because of the REAL-TIME factor, so that you know if the item is sold and what the exact price is. This can not be accomplished with the classified section. I have called on several classifieds that where more than 2 months old.

Flathead, the bad experiance with selling on ebay is thier encredibly horrid sign-up/sign-out process...It puts AOL to shame in it's difficulty to become "un hitched at the credit card" with!
They make opening a 'store front' a piece of cake--yet try to close said 'storefront' ,and you're destined to fail.
I made 300 buks (tripple the price paid) for a boat hull on trailer , sold on ebay. The sale cost me 80buks, and would've cost more ,had I let it continue unchallenged for the umpteenth time.
Lesson learned, is all i can say.

Re: Another idea for Admin5

It all sounds like a very high maintenance item to me. If you think policing the forums is a challenge, just wait till you have someone listing *** material, or selling products that cut into the megamalls volume, or advertising their stores or websites. And what of the guy that uses one ad and lets it run because he has 300 widgets to sell, but only pays one listing fee?

So iboats has several hundred related sites? Where can we find a listing of them so we can visit them? I know many are linked thru the iboats site, but there must be more that we might want to visit.

How about a dedicated amount of server space(small), qued access for only a limited number of adds and only up to a certain size(a pic included), for a fixed amount of time. Qued means because of the limited space, you might have to wait a week or two to place add if the site is REAL busy. This will shy away overuse(reduce server bandwith and cost). Police only for commercial adds and expunge and block user PERMANANTLY. No access again for 2 weeks for seller that has placed an add recently. If a fee is required...simple 1-3 dollar fee by seller.

Oh...and must be a memeber of this board for some pre determined amount of time(not to long..)
