Need some advice. As long as the subject is going on here today. After reading several threads concerning gearcase leaks, I'm asking for a couple of answers please.
My 1998 merc 115 offshore has water in the gearlube. I have had it serviced(seals) but I don't think they really did anything (or not everything).
I'm not seeing anything leaking from the propshaft.
I have read many tips for pressure testing and vacuum testing. As well as the fill and drain screw gaskets being important.
I do see (fresh) gearlube from the water pickup holes (after the motor was tilted up for a week) boat hasn't been in the water yet. I'm thinking the drive shaft/water pump might be the culprit.
I have read that the water pump should be replaced regularly so I'd like to start there.
Will I need special tools? Does the shaft slide right out after removing the pump components? Are there other seals on the drive shaft or does the water pump assembly seal the shaft? Should I get a service type manual? If so which would be recommended? Is there a shift shaft seal or O rings that will need replacement? (somewhere I read that you need to hold down the shift shaft when pulling the drive shaft).
All these and anything else, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for any input folks.

with lube coming out the intakes-that usually means the oil seals under the water pump plate..part #'s 26-43035 & 26-43036...yes there is a shift shaft seal...yes you should get a manual...no there are no special tools required and yes it will slide right out
