Hey guys, I know this has been beaten to death but I couldnt find a answer when searching so here goes. Just bought a 25 hp Johnson seahorse (my first motor) and cant find the serial number on it. Doesnt have the plate on the mounting bracket or anywhere else. Looked for the plug on the engine and couldnt find that. This is my first motor so its a possibility that I am looking in wrong place but Ive spend a good amount of time looking and come up with nothing that looked like the pictures posted previously about the engine plug thing. I found a round thing with the numbers 4919136 on it but it didnt look much like what Ive seen online.....any help identifying my motor would be greatly appreciated. This is the round thing with the numbers on it....not sure if it is anything relevant

If you believe the cowling is original to the motor and not painted then a picture helps identify it.

Re: Another Model/serial number Question

That disc in your picture is the serial number, which should be a 1978. But that doesn't help much else. We need the model number from the missing plate. Besides, the S/N disc looks slightly suspicious, like somebody has swapped it from another motor (???)

How did you get 78? What makes it look suspicious? Thanks

I see.....How did you get 78 from the number? Ive tried to use the number to look up anything about the motor but had no luck. Thank you

so are you looking to buy this motor, or maybe have bought it? What is the seller saying, or what was the story when you bought it? curious.

I just purchased it.... my first time purchasing a motor so didnt know much about looking for this type of thing. Nothing curious stuck out to me when I went to his house and me and him ran the motor on the boat.

mostly due to the missing plate, and the plug looking tampered with, and these little motors are popular with thieves, they also like props and lower units:facepalm:

and you had no sense of what year it was? looking for some background. maybe another clue or two. I get the sense you didn't like the idea of a '70s powerhead.

Re: Another Model/serial number Question

Dont have much background. Bought it off a guy that was selling it on the marine base close to my house. Seemed about as straight as possible. Went to his house and all. My thinking was closer to 90s but that was based purely off the appearance of the motor cover and what Ive seen in my limited experience but if thats what it is then thats what it is. What kind of clue could I provide?

The tiller handle with the shifter in the front came about in the 90s.

OK. not hounding you. If the seller or some paperwork indicated it was, say, a '92 (or whatever), could maybe work backwards cross walking to a serial or model number (i.e., ideally, a match or partial match to the number you have). I'm not much help there -- see a blue powerhead on a white, fairly late model Johnson. Evinrude blue?

Re: Another Model/serial number Question

I came to the 1978 year conclusion from my own private collection of Johnson serial numbers. I know that 4,914,579 and 4,927,354 are both 1978 as verified by the model numbers they accompanied, and since 4,919,136 falls between those two, well you know....

And it also is suspicious because I don't think 1978 powerheads were black, but I am not totally sure about that.

I suspect it is a stolen motor, as others also seem to think.

No, I appreciate the help. I dont have any paperwork for motor. Have titles for trailer and boat that I got it with. Both are 89. He told me motor was "mid 90s". Sorry not giving anyone much to go off of.

Ouch, not what I wanted to hear. Cant imagine this guy being a thief. Gave me contact info, went to his house, and titles on boat/trailer. But suppose he could have bought it from a thief. But thanks for the help.

Re: Another Model/serial number Question

Without accusing the seller of anything, maybe you could contact him and see if he can shed any more light. You need to know what's under the hood to be able to service it -- fair to put the question to him. Don't be confrontational.
