Another motor shipping question, greyhound?

I see there are a bunch of them in the past but none answered my question.

Has anyone tried shipping a small outboard by greyhound package express? It doesn't appear that the motor has to be boxed and it's relatively inexpensive, but who knows if it'll arrive in one piece I guess.

Anyone try it?

I've never shipped an outboard via busline freight, but had good experience with other stuff. Bottom line is weight and packaging...they put the stuff in the belly/hold of the bus, where it can shift and move unless it is securely packaged or held in place by other stuff. Then you get into handling...are they tossing it in there, or being pretty careful with it? In the end, you are taking the same risk regardless of the shipping service chosen...it's a crap shoot.

Yeah, it's cheap though. I'm trying to avoid spending $150+ just to get the motor here, it's just an old evinrude. I'll look around for some other ideas, thanks.

It seems like a great idea to me. Depending how rare/prestine the motor is. If it already has normal wear of an old boat motor, you are probably fine. I would wrap it in an old thick blanket and some duck tape, and send it on its way. What's the worst that could happen? If the answer is unacceptable, don't do it.

that's what I've been thinking. maybe a couple of shipping blankets. I think from him to me is less than $90 and the tank and other goods can go UPS.

The motor is a 56 evinrude fastwin that's been sitting in my dads garage for 20 years or more, I know the shift lever is broken off of it from a previous move but otherwise I'd say the condition is average, but I haven't seen it since I was a really little kid. I'm told my grandfather bought it new in 56.
I'm not collecting old motors or anything, just putting it on the back of a little 14' boat and using the crap out of it. :D
