Seems like every couple of months I read a story in the paper of another drowning here in south Florida that should not have happened.

Last weekend it was one of three guys who went out fishing late in the day. I don't remember the details but they took a wave over the stern (in Biscayne Bay - not out in the ocean) and the boat sank. One guy swam to an island, another was picked up barely alive in the water and the body of the third was found hours later. None were wearing a life jacket though they had them in the boat.

Guys - Please don't let me read about you. Most of the accidents/fatalities I read about are the result of improperly maintained equipment, inexperience, poor seamanship, bad or too much booze, lack of awareness of wind and waves or just plain stupidity.

Re: Another Needless Death

Now that I'm retired, I've started fishing alot by myself....since everybody else is working during the week. My wife gave me the auto-inflatable life vest, and its very comfortable to wear. Now I don't leave home w/o it.

BOAT.... Bring On Another Thousand

Re: Another Needless Death

I have yet to read of someone drowning wearing a life jacket. So what's the biggy about putting one on? We spend so much money on our boats... Why not spend a little bit on a comfortable life jacket? Is your life only worth a few bucks? Think about it.
