another no start issue

I have a 1994 Mercury 90 hp outboard and have been experiencing some terrible starting problems. I have been using the motor about once a month with no difficulties or problems.

Recently, when I turned the key.........nothing happen; no warning beep, no click, and the engine does not turn over. I tried to raise the outboard but the trim function was not working either. Mind you, the fish finder was operating fine and the running lights work perfectly.

thereafter, I got a new battery and tested to make sure that it's good with the same result, a big nothing. I also checked all the connectors/wires for defect but all appears to be fine.

the engine was not overheating [peeing fine] and it has plenty of oil.

I have read most of the posts in here and the answer seems to point to the solenoid.

Can anyone confirm this for me so that I won't waste any money buying a part that may not be needed.

any help is appreciated.
thank you

I would be looking at the main wiring harness connections (at both ends) to see if the connections are corroded. Those other accessories are usually wired off a seperate circuit, not from the engine harness.

Hi Don

First off, thanks for the post that you have posted here previous regarding troubling shooting with the test light and the ignition system. I'm heading to the store tonight to buy a test light as a matter of fact.
To answer your question, the connection seems to be intact at both ends. I hooked up my emergency car battery charger to the boat battery and was able to get a weak warning beep but nothing thereafter.

I figure the test light will give me more insight to the condition of the ignition switch and/or the solenoid but I won't be able to work on it today.

thanks for the input Don.

Re: another no start issue

Hi Don

After spending sometime on the boat recently, here is what I did and found out.
1. I was able to wiggle the ignition switch back and forth and check for corrosion.
2. I was able to get the warning beep to come on when I turn the key to the first position [ON] after playing with it for so long.
3. Still can't get the motor to start when the key is in the second position [START].
4. power trim will not work also.
4. I have come to the conclusion that my ignition switch is faulty.
5. Will try and change the ignition switch and report back.

Regards
