hi, thanks in advance for any and all help. i am replacing the lower shift cable on my 88 bayliner cobra 2250 with a 5.7 OMC cobra drive.

engine model 574APARY according to tag(they told me its actually an 87)
transom model 984757
drive 984543

my local boat shop got me a sierra cable, 18-2245-1, my problem is that when i am attempting to adjust it the core of the cable appears to be to long, i am using the special tools sold for the adjustment, maybe i am doing something wrong? i don't really know, i also saw on the stuarts posting where they ARY drive appears to have the adjustment slot at the bottom of the shift lever, mine is at the top(http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/sb4052_5.jpg), so i'm not sure if this was an update? or if i just have the wrong cable?

Looks like you need to loosen the screw that goes to the bellcrank to adjust for the excess length you think you have. Not exactly sure. Been 10 years since I last replaced one of these.

I never used that tool that you are using on the engine side. Where did you find that?

Basically, when you finally have it set up correctly, if you are in neutral at your control, that bellcrank needs to be at 90 which is being set by your tool down at the drive.

By having the cable at the high position, you may have too much throw. I am not sure what the ramnifications of that would be.

thanks for the response and great info, i will postion the cable in where it should lay, and adjust the screw at the bellcrank to see if it will work for me.

i got that tool up at the engine side a couple years ago, i found it online searching for the part numbers listed in my manual. i beleive i actually got it through the iboats store honestly, only found it once though, took a lot of searching.

thanks again

Re: another omc cable issue...

i laid the cable down in place where it should normally run, didn't change the lenght at the rear. then i loosened off the bolt to allow the arm on the bellcrank to rotate to take up the slack, however, there is a flat notch on the bellcrank shaft that aligns the arm, so it is not able to rotate. any more ideas would be appreciated.. only other thing i know to do is to trim the end of cable at the engine to allow the core cable to slide forward and allow it to be attached at the back, but i don't like the idea of it honestly...

Are you sure your using that tool correctly? I see you have the alignment plate attached, forget that cable length tool for now and attach the cable at the lower end, then go up above, it kinda looks like the trunion on the upper end of the cable is not setting in your fixture saddle, but i've never actually seen that TOOL before. Also I'm pretty sure all the other cables should be unhooked when performing the adjustment of the lower cable, including the throttle cable. Not that it help you any but it does look like the cable is too long something aint right there.

Wait a minute, the lower shift cable is supposed to attach to that pin at the bottom of the bracket you have pictured, are you trying to put it on the top?

yes i am attaching the cable at the lower end of the shift bracket, the other (red) cable in the pic is the cable from the controller, it is unhooked off of the pin, you just can't really tell in the pic. both cables are actually unhooked at the controller as well, since i am also replacing it.

all the tool does is hold the measurement for you, it holds it in place with the jam nut on the end of the cable, and sets the length using the bolt at the end of the cable...at least from what i have found, but not many have ever seen/used it, it just makes it a little easier from what i have read

that tool is also listed in the stuarts post... http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/tools.jpg

has anyone else had a similar issue with the sierra cables? i vaguely remember having to trim the front end of the last one i put on, it worked for a little while, but other issues/cable failure bit me again...

random thought here, my manual shows the upper measurement being taken from the cable jacket to the center of the hole where it slides on the pin.

is this correct? or do you have to measure from the trunnion on the cable?

Not sure about that one off hand, I have a manual I can look it up, but what I am sure of is that I have my old cable laying right here the sheath was broken but the cable itself is fine, the cable measures exactly 68" long if that helps.

thanks for the measurement, i will check that tomorrow in the daylight to verify if it is even correct before i go to much farther. i looked online, and everything i have found agrees with my manual. that you take the measurement from the end of the cable jacket, so i am going to say it is the correct way at this point. thanks again

Re: another omc cable issue...

talked to the boat shop today, we looked through the manuals, verified that i was doing the procedure correctly, couldn't seem to figure out what was going on. then he figured out what i was doing wrong, near the engine end, the cable wasn't fully seating into the hole in the cable end, it was stopping where the jam bolts were, and not going into the inspection hole. i came home, cleaned out the cable end to allow it to slide in fully, everything fit like a glove. now i just gotta get some help to put the drive back on...

thanks for all the help
