Another Outdrive question

I have a pre-alpha '72 drive, I noticed today if I forget to lower the drive before I shift it will not shift out of neutral, why is that? And am I doing some damage to the lower unit or cable? I had to return home instead of going out, but after the vibration on the road home and some failed attempts to engage it with the muffs on, it suddenly began to function again. Any input is appreciated and thanks:)

Re: Another Outdrive question

Replace your lower shift cable......
The unit will should shift in & out of gear easily with no load, IE on land & muffs......
If you had to resort to vibration as a fix, your cable is going bad or is kinked.....
However, in the water & under load the shift interrupt switch will not function properly with a bad cable.....
Never run the engine with the drive in the trailer position, it wreaks havoc on the ujoints.....;)
