I have a '96 Mercruiser 5.7 in front of an Alpha Gen. II. It's a raw water cooled system and I replaced the impeller last spring. It ran fine all last season at around 160 deg. When winterizing it last fall I failed to notice that some jagweed in the shop put the hose on the hot water faucet. The engine got up to around 200 deg. b4 I shut it down! The water burnt the heck out of my arm pulling the riser plugs to drain the engine. Not knowing about the hot water situation and being a tad chilly outside, I pulled the t-stat and put it away for the winter (after my normal winterizing procedures). I installed a new thermostat in it yesterday and started her up. The gauge registered nothing for a few minutes and then shot up to 180 and climbing. I shut it down @ 195 deg.

All 4 hoses on the t-stat housing were VERY hot and the risers were as well- I don't have a thermometer (yet) but they were MUCH hotter than usual. There was steam coming out of the prob hub but COLD water coming out of the transom vents??

Did I get a bad t-stat? And where does the transom outlet water come from? It certainly was't circulating thru the engine!! I have a manual (SELOC) but the cooling schematic stops after the risers.

Thanks for any advice you can give!

Don't see it being the thermostat, your not getting flow so need an impeller

Remove the hose off the thermostat housing coming from the drive. Turn water on and fire up the motor to check flow

You called it sir! Not a drop of water from the intake hose. I guess no matter how new they are- they can fail- especially when winterizing with hot water!! :blue:
