another overheating question

My 1985 xr2 150 is running hot at wot but is staying cool at idle and fast idle. I ordered a new impeller and will install that as soon as I get it but am looking for some advice on other possibilities. My pee stream is constant but I have not checked the water pressure. I also assume my tstats are fine because it stays cool at idle. I know very little about the poppet valve and how to troubleshoot if it is operating properly and how it really works. I am under the assumption that it opens at a certain pressure and allows more water to flow through the cooling passages. If I do have a poppet issue will the hopefully increased pressure created by a new impeller and wear plate help it open sooner. Basically I am asking if the two are related at all. Thanks.

Re: another overheating question

Glad to hear you are already doing the impeller. I would do T-Stats too. Fairly cheap and GOOD insurance. Could be a problem of flow when running at WOT. (The t-stat could not be opening FULLY, thus restricting flow at WOT)

Best of Luck.
