We have a 1993 18ft Maxum that is in need of paint. The maroon stripe arond the boat is all that needs to be done. My husband has a quote of $600 to repaint this stripe. Is this reasonable or is this something that we could do? How do we go about it? Thanks, he will be thrilled that I have found another project for him!

1999sailing

Yes you can do it. You can brush it or roll it or spray. Spray is best but good results can be achieved with other methods. Tape off the area around the stripe, sand the area to be painted, you might want to use a fiberglass wash if your painting over gel coat just to prepare the surface and go to it with a good grade of marine paint such as Interlux, etc. Save yourself a bunch of money.

Be careful of masking the line. Masking tapes increase adhesion over time, and can pull off paint if they've got too strong a hold. Aim to finish the job in a day or two. Best tape to use is auto spray light grip stuff - it doesn't grip as hard as the home painting stuff. Costs more, but worth it if it avoids having to repaint the area it was on.

Also make sure surface you put tape on is clean and tape pushed down properly or paint will leak under it and give poor edge lines.

If you've used any polishes on the current surface to be painted, scrub it down with kitchen cream cleaner (don't know US brands - the sort that have fine powder in them for extra scrubbing power) and clean up with auto prep wash. This is necessary to get rid of waxes and especially silicone which will prevent paint adhering properly and give bad finish.
