I had so much fun getting my 1958 35hp Super Seahorse going (it runs great now) that I went out and bought a 1958 Evinrude Sportwin 10hp 10016. :D Actually I needed a ten horse to get into the lakes I like to fish, and I couldn't pass this one up for the price. Its not been run for 12 years, but we'll see what we can do about that. ;)

I do have a question. Can this old motor be switched over to a single line fuel tank? I'd like to run it on the same tank that I use for the super seahorse. I've heard that they can be, but this is the place to find out for sure.
Thanks
Tom

Sure you can switch em. What you have to figure out is how to mount the fuel pump so it'll pick up pressure pulses from the crankcase. And block off the old pressure supply line.
Since the 10hp was used into the sixties, you may be able to find a bypass cover that's already set up to take a fuel pump. Then it'd be a bolt-on. If you have no local graveyard, try Twin City Outboard.

It's most often cheaper just to buy a 2-line tank off ebay rather than convert. After all you'll need a new pump, quick connect, perhaps a bypass cover, hoses, clamps, etc.

Sounds like a good project though. :)
(I want to find one of those 5.4hp Zephyrs next... :) )

Thanks Paul
Actually the motor came with the original tank. It looks good inside and the rusty outside is no big deal ... I've been in the auto body business for longer than I care to think. I saw this same fuel tank on ebay, in about the same condition, at $56 with 15 hours left on the auction. Since I paid $51 for the motor and the tank, and spent $15 on gas picking them up, I might have to go into the fuel tank selling business soon ;) Then again, I saw a 56 model of the sportwin on ebay that didn't make reserve at $435. Maybe I should be in the outboard restoration business?

FWIW, don't know how expensive it will be to convert, but my '63 10hp Sportwin, is single gas line. Bought mine in '86, and it had been sitting for many years. Fuel pump, carb kit, and impellor, and back in business. Good luck with your restoration.

I'd stick with the pressure tank, they work fine and rebuild kits are available, an added bonus is that most would-be thieves won't have a clue how they work, leave your boat with the fuel cap cracked open slightly and they'll never be able to figure out how to start the thing!

One thing to keep an eye on with the four-bolt lower unit 10-horses. That unit started life with the 5.5 and 7.5. They added slightly beefier gears and shafts, but didn't do much with the support bearings, so they can be a little on the weak side if all is not well. If the motor shows ANY evidence of water intrusion in the gear oil, I strongly recommend dropping $30.00 on a seal kit and installing it. You'll see lots of these motors on the racks at marinas (and the low-boy 9.5s which use the same unit) missing the lower ends. They work well, but the margin for error isn't much...

- Scott

Thanks for all of the advice, and please stay tuned... I'm sure I'll have more questions.

The biggest temptation for keeping the pressure tank system is to keep the motor original. For convenience though, switching it over to a single line system would definitely be best. That way it could share the same fuel tank that my 58 35hp Super Seahorse uses.
Tom

I have to same setup. I actually like the older tank setup because of the attention it draws at the lake. Lots of compliments. To me, having the original setup kind of adds to the charm of these old motors.
