I'm new to the forum world and snooped into this friendly group. I just joined up and would like to ask for input about the infamous crankcase breather hose. I have learned I may have a developing issue with gasket leaks and other nasty things because I have a greasy buildup on top of my 1994 3.0LX Mercruiser. The breather hose needs to be replaced certainly but, I am skeptical of the engineering that casually vents crankcase gas through a loosely connected tube toward the carb for reburning. What about using a mini-breather/filter I saw on a few performance auto sites. I think it would be better to allow the fumes to escape and capture any oils so the engine is cleaner and the amount of excess oil can be measured.
