Hello Again

You may remember assisting with my stator and rectifier replacement, we really never were able to pin down the exact year my engine is.
I need to replace a Power Pack that I fried. My engine has two Power Packs (582530 Left side 582645 right side.) Neither of these shows in a search on the BRP site.
I have noticed there is a difference in the part numbers for the 85 verses the 86, 87 models with a different number for the timer base also.
My question is... Will the dual Power Packs that are for the later models 86 and 87 be interchangeable with the 85 model?
We noted that the flywheel on my engine had numbers scribed from an 85 model from a salvaged engine, but I can't be certain of the ignition parts.

Thanks for any insight you may have for me!!

The difference in the 85 vs 86, 87 is the position of the wires in the connectors. No matter which of these years you get for the packs, just match the color codes to the timer base.

Thanks

I hope I will be able to retain the connectors and just move the pins if it's necessary. I was able to get a new oem PP at a great price but it is for the 86-87 model. I will let you know when it gets here. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

I spoke with "Race" on the Scream and Fly forum warning of useing the newer single PP from the 88 with the older timer base. I guess this would also be usable if the wires of the timer base are matched up ?

Well... As I live and breathe, Mr. Postman came to the door with my new Power Pack as I got off the forum.
Pulled the old one off and checked the wire colors, the ones on the engine were the same as the newer part. (Every now and then I get lucky) There were even letters marking the connection pins inside the connectors.
I can get another one of the Power Packs at the same price and since they are new and cheap, I think I will go ahead and replace the other as well. I noted the new Power Packs Had a 6700 rpm limit but the old Packs were labeled "6T 5, and the other 6T 18" . I think it will be best to have them matching.

Thanks again for the assist Dhadley

If that was "Racer" you spoke with he's one of the best in the country on OMC stuff. Anyway, you don't want to mix up the early ignition components with the late. Even the flywheels are different. Just keep everything the same.

One thing I'd do -- once you get the new packs on, mark TDC on each cylinder (put the cylinder number right by each number). We do it with a yellow paint pen or White Out. Then spin the motor over and check each cylinder with a timing light to make sure we got each one firing correctly. You can have two mixed up and that V8 will still try to run and very bad things can happen.

Sounds like good advice.

This time when I attach the timeing light I will double check the ground on each cylinder to make sure I don't fry either of my new Power Packs. (That's how I fried the first one) Opps!!

Hi Dhadley

I thought I would post findings in case someone else ever needs to find the wiring order for the 86- 87 V8 with the two superceded Power Packs # 0582262. The wires would seem to go on the way they came off in terms of length but doing this will not give the correct firing order. The color code below is the arrangement.

The Port, Power Pack is fitted to the upper four cylinders, and the Starboard Pack is fitted to the lower four cylinders.

Port

Starboard
