I want to re-seal my upper and intermidiate as well as ther lower gearcases in my 1985 OMC stringer 400. Can I get away with using the old shims if I don't replace the ball gears or any gears and bearings? just replacing seals and gaskets... thanks

Yes you can. And in many cases, you can reuse the shims even if you change bearings, as bearings are made to such close tolerances.

Be careful that you don't bend or damage them in any way & when you tighten bolts use the proper torques so you don't distort the shims and they should be fine.

I changed upper bearings on 2 occasions, the original shims were still right on spec. Changing ball gears won't affect gear lash.
