Another question regarding gimbal housing seal

I finally got my entire engine and transom assembly out, (found some soft spots in the transom... that's another project!), and I notice that the rubber o-ring in the gimbal housing I removed is a one piece rubber gasket. The seal I purchased is a softer foam rubber gasket that is one long piece - like a circle that someone cut. It is a GLM part # 86712.

A couple questions...
1) Is this a good gasket? Are they all a "foam rubber" type verses a more "conventional" rubber o-ring seal?

2) I bought the seal here. It shows a picture of a seal that is a circle, not one that has been cut. Is this supposed to be a circle, and perhaps mine has been either cut or pulled apart?

Any help would be appreciated.

(Keep watching for questions about the transom repair! )

Oh yeah, this is for an Alpha 1, gen 1 gimbal housing.

Re: Another question regarding gimbal housing seal

I may have answered part of my question. It appears I have a defective seal. The parts guy says it is supposed to be a complete circle. But does anyone have any opinion on the GLM gasket, either good or bad?
