Recently I picked up a 97 Bayliner 2655. The previous owner told me that he had replaced the lower shift cable and it might need adjustment.
When I shift the drive into reverse on muffs it immediately engages the interrupt switch, it holds it in that position killing the engine.
I watched the video and printed out the manual from the adults only section but I just cant get it to adjust properly. The adjustment seems to
me to be pretty straight forward and I have checked and rechecked my adjustments.
I'm about ready to just buy a new shift cable and start over..any thoughts before I do this?
Thanks!

When you measured the amount of travel what did you get? Also, check the spring is in place behind the lever... (It's a Vee shaped spring)

I am having the EXACT same problem on an Alpha 1 Gen One - The thing is, I didn't replace the shift cable, I only had the lower unit off to replace some seals and the water pump impeller. I have a feeling it may have to do with the shift shafts not being fully engaged into forward drive upon reassembly of the unit, OR, the shift cable end was not positioned properly when re-attaching the drive. I too am very interested in a solution.

OK Scottie your problem is that the gear housing (lower) was in reverse rather than forward when you put it back together. Shift to wot forward, drop the lower, turn the lower shift shaft (short splines shaft) all the way clockwise, turn the prop counterclockwise till it locks and bungee to hold it there. Put it back together, making sure the top of the intermediate shift shaft is pointing straight ahead and you should be good to go.

Thanks so much - thought it would be an easy fix. I would have sworn up and down that I had it locked in forward - but I ended up just swearing up and down. This time I will bungee it in place.

love1u0 - sounds like this might be your fix. I am not sure how mechanical you are, but I think if you follow the dis-assembly instructions for replacing the water pump impeller, and just ensure your lower shift shaft is locked in forward when reassembling, you can do this pretty easily. It involves draining the gear oil, removing the lower gear housing, make your adjustment, reassemble, pressure test, reinstall. I am sure there is a guide in the Adults Section.

Love has a Alpha Gen II, so no intermediate ss. But the lower shift shaft can come out, and wind up "off a tooth" like the Alpha I. First off determine if you are in reverse or forward. Try turning the prop, if it locks when you turn it counterclockwise you are in forward, locks clockwise, reverse.

Thing is on mine, the prop locks counterclockwise in fwd, and clockwise in rev. I still hope this is the fix. Sorry if I hi-jacked this thread.

Chris, I get exactly 3/8 of an inch. The spring for the switch is in place and moving correctly.

It seems I have had it in adjustment but shifting from forward to neutral to reverse a few times and it goes right back to triggering the cut out switch
in its full cutout position.

Not enough... You should be getting 1-3/4". That's travel, not slop...

You have the right travel in the remote control cable? (3" +/- 1/4"), and the anchor pin for the lower shift cable is at the bottom of the slot?

Chris.....

Thanks

I just wanted to give an update. I put in a new shift cable and it goes into forward and reverse just fine now.
I'm not sure what the previous owner messed up, but it works now.

I think I will need to adjust the remote cable a bit because it feels a little tight going into reverse...but it no longer
trips the cutout switch!

Thanks
