What's the difference between an Engine and a Motor?

Yes and no. Just wondering why we call them motors instead of engines. Outboard Motors, sterndrive Motors. General Motors makes whole cars, not electric motors. So why is an Automobile Engine the same thing as a Car Motor?

us english call cars "motors" as in "got a new motor John".. which should say.. "have you got a new car John".. <br /><br />"cant" was the one that my teacher told me didnt exist.. a motor can also be hydraulic.<br />a motor is driven. if you were trog you could drive your motor to the pub for some bangers and mash. but thats just slang. i was taught a motor is driven, by an engine by electricity etc.

i spose to us lot car is just short for motor car.. which would be short for motorized carriage.. we could also have a motor boat or motor cycle..<br /><br />no idea where automobile comes from thow.. he he.. thow i spose it means by mobile by itself.. mobile without a horse.. a fancy way of saying horseless carriage..<br /><br />trog100

Terminology... that is all. Depends on which part of the world you are on and what sort of ENGLISh you were taught. American English is similar yet different for the "Queen's" english. If you understand the context than that should not be a problem to convey what you want to pass across.

You guys up North apparently have WAY too much time on your hands here in your offseason. All these questions about winterizing and freezing and motors vs engines.... all the while i'm out using my boat here in sunny South Florida! (And yet, here I sit at my computer responding to, in Willie's words, "Another silly question." )

Yea Fishmark -- but while our boats are just covered with snow (but it is melting now) yours is encrusted in salt and you are keeping an eye on the weather to see when the next hurricane threatens to send it into the next state. We also have one distinct advantage, our boats last twice as long as we can only use them six months out of the year.
