Another Tach question. /w picture

I bought this tach off of ebay, it lists will work on any outboard with a 12pole alt. <br /><br />My question is.. i have an 84 65hp commercial 3cyl .. is this a 12pole alt!? i just thought that was the mainstream... except for force motors.. <br /><br />if it is a 12 pole how can i make it work on a 3 cyl. its only got options for 2 and 6.<br />I dont think it will work.. but you guys will know better then i will<br /><br />Ill sell it outright incl shipping for 25$ if it doesnt work thanks<br /><br /> http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...d=1,1&item=4618271743&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT <br />team_starcraft<br />

That engine's charging system operates on a 6 pulse setup. Normally the tach has a dial whereas it can be set to 6. You state that it has only two settings which are 2 and 6. I'd suggest setting it to number 6 as a try out seting.

that sounds logical, but it would still need a setting for amount of cylinders correct?

If the tach can be set to 6 pulses, it doesn't<br />matter if the engine is a 2, 4, 6, or 8 cylinder<br />operating a 6 pulse alternator. The pulse<br />setting is what regulates the rpm reading.

Doesn't matter what cylinder it is. If it has a 6 pole setting, you're good to go....

The tach gets its info from the alternator on the top of the motor. It doesn't matter if you have a 100 cylinders turning the alternator the tach will still read the rpm of the alternator. The setting is not for cylinders on most outboards it is for poles in the alternator

Or a 3 cylinder, it doesn't matter.

Thats awsome to hear guys... im getting the boat out of storage this week! So suspect tons of dumb prop questions once i get this tach in..<br /><br /><br />thanks for all your help.. <br />im glad i didnt smash the thing on the ground yet..<br /><br />team_starcraft
