Another Tach Question

I recently purchased a Polar Kraft 1760 with a 2001 70 hp 2-cycle. I want to change the prop from a stainless to a composite, but need Tach data. The problem is NO Tach, but I did find what appears to me a tach cable in the cluster under the console. When I read thre forums, most tach answers deal with electronic tachs. Is what I am seeing really a tach cable and do they still make mechanical gauges? I may just have to go with a Tiny Tach gauge.

Thank you

Re: Another Tach Question

The tach on a Johnson needs 3 wires - Grey (tach signal) Purple (12v ignition switched) and Black (ground). These wires should be there at the control box ready to be used. What color is the one you found under the dash?

Re: Another Tach Question

Thanks for responding. It looks like an speedometer or tach bale I used to have on my old Triumph Tr-6. It is a cable about as thick as your thumb with a inner cable that rotates.

Re: Another Tach Question

I stand corrected. Thank you for your patience on this Novice. I probably "wanted" to see a mechnanical cable because that is what I am familiar with. The cable is NOT what I thought.

Thanks again

Re: Another Tach Question

You would probably be looking for a "System Check" connector which has eight wires. The tachometer would have eight male points in two parallel rows of 4 each.

A good inductive tachometer will give you accurate RPM reading if you want to get on to the propeller selection.
