Just had a '79 Evinrude 100 installed on my boat. Would like to install a switch on the motor to raise/lower it. I was going to use a spring loaded on-off-on toggle switch. I just don't know how many amps the pump draws or the wiring color for the pump wires. Auto Zone has a switch (35 amp);.Would this work?

if you know the motor resistance calculate the amps , I = V divide by R = AMPS check and see how many wires your motor has 2 or 3 because the colour code changed you can also connect a ammeter in series this will give you the amps too .

Motor inrush current is about 30A. So a 35A switch should work for quite a while.

Thanks for the quick responses. The other motor (Force) was a 2wire motor with simple wiring. blue up and green down. It also had relays inline.; don't know about this one yet. Owners/service manual is coming. Thanks for the help. RF

In any event should the motor be overloaded it has a thermal switch inside that will cut the supply before it burns out .

Do you have solenoids on that PTT unit? If so, the solenoids probably draw less than 5A.
