another trim problem - erratic needle

Hi,
Older boat, beginning 4th season of ownership.
When we first used it the trim gauge seemed fairly accurate, at least usable, but has slowly gotten worse. It almost always reads at the top of the gauge, and when the button is pressed the needle bounces all over the place. Once it settles it always stays way high.

Sound like a worn sending unit? Something more involved?

Liquid, The bouncing needle sounds like you have bad electrical connections. I would check the gauge's connections to pos, neg and the sender wires. The sender is a variable resister(actually a copper ring and pointer), mounted on the outdrive verticle pivot point. It is therefore suceptable to the elements, and will get corroded and read high. The fix is to remove the plastic cover and clean it up.
