Another VRO question...

I have a 1996 90HP V4 engine that is working well. I've read a lot of negative things about VROs and it seems a lot of folks disconnect them and go 50-1.

My question is rather than waiting for the VRO to fail are there any gauges, I'm thinking engine temperature gauge, that would give a quick indication that the VRO is failing? If the engine is not getting the proper mix, would the temperature gauge be indicative of something going wrong?

Would appreciate some comments...

Opinions vary wildly.---There is a test you can / should do annually to confirm condition of VRO unit.----Also in my opinion the VRO is elegantly simple to take apart and confirm it's condition as well.-----Also change the filter in the oil tank regularly.

Your VRO pump already has a no flow alarm on it and when VROs fail they tend to over oil the motor. Probably 95% of the motors I have seen burned up and blamed on VROs ended up being something else. The VRO is a good system that got blamed for a lot of stuff it never caused

Get an OMC Factory service manual. All test procedures are in there.

Thanks for the replies. I have the manual and will look into doing some maintenance and changing the oil filter... And from what I can gather the temperature gauge would not be a good idea?

In a no oil situation the temp only goes up "as" the damage is being done, not before.
