Re: anti fouling paint
plugger,
If the bottom is in good condition and smooth you can sand and repaint. Each coat applied adds a little more weight to the boat, thats all.If the old bottom paint is lifting/peeling thereby lifting the fresh paint, you may need to remove it all and start new.I removed 4 coats this summer on my boat with a heat gun and dull scraper.Heat softens the paint(and gelcoat)Care must be taken with this method or you will gouge the gelcoat.Took me 2 days to do my 22'boat.
The more coats applied, the thicker it gets and the harder it is to remove.Just something to keep in mind.A marina/boatyard can do this job for you also....If you do have it removed, consider an ablative bottom paint that wears away at a controlled rate.Re-apply as needed, minimal build-up.
