Working on winterizing my 3.0 mercruiser... The manual just says to drain water out but doesn't speak to filling with antifreeze. Is antifreeze necessary?? Why doesn't the manual say to do it but everything else I read says to? The boat will be in an unheated garage in se virginia. thanks in advance for your help!!

Right now would be a very good time to search this bulletin board for post within the last 30 days with winterize as the keyword. You'll find plenty of opinions. (All boat shops in Indianapolis Dry Block)

It's how to get there that differs somewhat.

I live in an area where we have 10 20 days of freezing weather, and a lot more mild days during the winter, so I use my boat several times in between the cold days. I just Drain........

Here I am in the cold cold north we all fill our blocks with 50/50 mix of automotive antifreeze. Have done this for over 30yrs without any problems.

I would rather add antifreeze now, than take a big chance that there is one pocket of water that just somehow didn't drain out.

I highly recommend antifreeze over draining only.#1-it is easy to do #2-antifreeze has anti corrosive additives in it #3-it is easy to think you have drained everything when infact there are pockets of water in places you dont want any. #4-an empty engine cavity is a great place for a family of mice to spend a winter.I am sure there are many other reasons you will get from this forum.Charlie

More of my .02 worth.
Warm the engine to operating temperature on the Muffs with the garden hose. Switch to the 60/40 antifreeze using the gravity or my sump pump preferred method. Run the Temperature back up to operating+ temp.

Fog the engine dead, open all drains, drop the lower circulating pump hose. into each drain hole insert a pipe cleaner to help get any particle out. I remove the drain set from the manifolds to make sure the larger particles come out. I leave the drains open and the hose removed for a few days to let the moisture evaporate. The heated engine helped get a lot of the moisture out also.
remove sparkplugs, squirt in some fog oil.

In a few days close up the drains, reinstall the hose, and be done. This assumes you have already changed the oil and filter on the engine and the OD.

Also be sure to lower the OD to it's lowest point to relax the bellows and to drain off any mix. I tie wrap my through the hull exhaust closed. you might consider if your exhaust has large openings you might consider sealing them also. (Pesky varmits)

From http://www.vanagon.com/info/articles/coolants.html

it's clear that coolants will ultimately breakdown or are continually breaking down and will contribute to corrosion. Dry Iron will corrode less.

1969 Kaikheafer Mercrusier TypeII, 327 cu. in. 225HP all original minus a few wear parts. Dryblock winterized every year since it was new in out family. 34 years on a pair of LOG style manifolds is quite good.
