Antifreze for winter storage?

I was thinking how there always seems to be a little water left in the lower unit even after trimming the motor down when the boat's back in my driveway. I was concerned about how to get it out for winter storage so it wouldn't freeze. But then I was thinking maybe there's enough room for it to expand without hurting anything. But a friend reccomends setting up a rig where you take the muffs and attach a short length of hose to a funnel and feed a 50-50 mix of antifreze and water through the pump and out the telltale before putting the boat away for storage. Is this a good idea? I think antifreze is mildly corrosive (which is one of the reasons it's cut with water). I live in the northeast where it does certianly get below freezing (sometimes below zero). Is the antifreze thing a good idea?

Well, I would think there would be a big risk of not getting enough cooling while trying to funnel antifreeze into the muffs. Also I've never heard of anyone doing this before, and I'm sure you're not the only one that lives in a cold climate. :)

There is no need to worry about the drive. You will not have freeze up problems.

Just make sure you have the engine tilted down. And put fresh gear oil in.

TMD
