Any advice? at a loss...

I bought a 79 bayliner mutiny for 150$, It has a volvo aq140a, 2.1 engine and a 280 out drive, when i bought it I planned on fixing it and using it for a few years then selling it,

I put on a new starter, points, condencer, and a used exugast manifold and it ran perfect, by the way the exugast port on #4 was in really really bad shape, the area for the steel washer was totally gone, I jb welded it and it seemed to work allright just a little exugast leak.

I took it out 5 times and had no problems at all, then when crusing about I slowed down to stop and it just died like the idle was to low. tried to restart it with no luck, then the starter started making a different noise and turned the engine over very slowly, I thought it was a bad starter as I had trouble with 3 previous starters,

I gave up when I saw gas dripping out the carbs, and got towed in, when I got home I pulled the plugs and cranked it over the cylienders were full of water, the engine oil had about 3 extra quarts of water also, I have continued to try and start it and have just found out the timing belt is slipping, too much stress on it when cranking full of water?

I dont know what I should do! Do I pull the head off, order a new belt and try again, or should I pull the block and take it in to a machine shop to look for cracks? Any Ideas?

If you have water in the cylinders and in the oil you likely have a head gasket issue or cracked block. Putting a new belt on it would be a waste of time until you fix the major issues.

Do a cylinder leakage test on it before disassembly

That manifold gave way more than likely. Get that water out of the cylinders asap and oil them up. Change the oil. Examine the manifold very closely. If it has one crack, it will have others. Replace it and retest on the water.

Re: Any advice? at a loss...

after a new 12$ timing belt, changing the oil twice the old 2.1 came back to life she ran great, a little timing and carb adjusting and she ran beter than before, I checked the pressure of the cylinders when she was cold 130 on all 4, then I ran her for 20 miniutes got her good and hot, checked her again 130 all around. so what happened to me? Howd I get water in my oil, and water in my cylinders? My timing belt must of slipped then I cranked on it for a while, could cranking the engine with the timing totally off suck water up in to the exugast valves and thus in to the cylinders and past the rings in to the crankcase? I remeber being told when your driving a car in the water if your tail pipe is under the water and you turn your car off... when you try to restart it it sucks water up in to the engine! thats the only logical thing I can think of. I will take her out to the lake and see how she does but would really love to know what excatly happend to me!

You may have had some reversion if your timing belt moved.

I took her out on the lake and she started right up at the ramp, ran around for ten minuites fiddling with the carbs, set the idle to low and she shut down, no problem Im thinking Ill just tighent the idle screw up a little and crank her back up. I could hear water being sucked in to the valves when cranking and pulled the plugs cranked it shoots water 12 feet out! There was no way I could get the water out it just kept coming in, got towed in again! cranked it over at home and got about 1 gal to spray out of the head, She runs great at home hooked up to the hose, when shes in the water she fills the cylinders full, gota be an easy fix right?
