Hello friends, I am about done with a Rochester 2GC carburetor rebuild and noticed in the instructions some later Rochesters did not have the check ball in the pump base. My carb did not have the check ball or the pump return spring shown in the schematic. I guess my question is should i not worry about the return spring because it is not required or try to find a return spring? Do the later 2GC carbs without the checkball not need the return spring for the pump? Dont know how many times this carb has been raped. To quote a member here. Just because....

Thats what i am referring to. Its probably the same casting. I just didnt pull a check ball or spring out of mine. Just wondering if it needed the spring even though it didnt have one when i tore it down.

if it were my 75 mercruiser 165hp L6 i'd say yes, 72 yes. but we don't know what you have that carb. mounted on. what kinda engine/drive package do you have? i think someones sig here is, "just because you found it that way don't mean it's supposed to be that way" or the likes, this may apply in your case, but we still should know what ya got to help make a determination... i use the service manual as the guide to what i'm working on. that sping and check ball show up as being used. but like i said, that's mercruiser s/m #2 that covers my rig. we don't know which s/m applies to yours. the s/m is where you find the facts that would be for your application... myself, i'm no carb expert, so need to refer to the s/m...

I guess that would depend on the model of 2GC carb you have. Do you have the carb number on the side of the carb handy? knowing what engine and make would help also. Some have that check ball, some don't.

Not really suprised about the check ball not being there because the rebuild instructions says to expect that on some. Its the missing pump spring that it doesnt show not needing. I am interpreting the instructions that it should be there.
Carberator tab 13765990A1
stamped on carb 17057132
1983 470 3.7L

Thank you for your knowledge.

looking at s/m #3. which refers to your carb. the return spring is necessary. the check ball is not used on later models. since s/m #3 is though 84, i would think you have the late model version. no check ball. but you do need the return spring... that's the way i interpret the instructions for your ring... info found on pp 4B17, s/m #3...

I agree...All of the 2GC carbs i have rebuilt all get the spring put back in.
Some have the ball and some didn't but the spring needs to go in.
