No time to do it the right way, so I just plant some cukes in the former flower bed. I love a fresh cuke, and hate the rubbery ones they sell in the store.

Wow, I can't even think about planting for another two months. I'll get the tiller out about mid-may and get the seedlings in about Memorial day. In the garden I have corn, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, cukes, zuchinni and summer squash.

On the deck I grow my Jalepenos, cayennes and all of the herbs (oregano, basil, thyme and parsley).

Once the seedlings are in, my job is done. I do not weed it at all, that's the kids and wifes job.

Grew up gardening/farming but got away from it for a few years. When we bought this house I planted a garden fairly large. Then next year I got the boat...Told the wife I'll keep lawn mowed (she does flowers) other than that it's tomatoes for me an punkins for the kids. I cannot stand store tomatoes, it is impossable to get goodones.

GOTTA HAVE PRIORITIES RIGHT!!

Yes, I love it now, I hated it when I was little as I always had to do the weeding and figured I had something better to do. Glad now as I remember most of what my folks tried to teach me. Im always pulling something up when we go for drives, I have things growing around here that I have no Idea what they are. That reminds me, I need to get some Tomatoes going. I do not have a big enough place right now, but we allways plant a few tomatoes in a couple buckets we have on the deck.

Re: Any gardeners here?

Our last frost date is about May 5th. And the tomatoes won't do much anyway because the ground is to cold. My first harvest is usually around the end of June w/ tomatoes started in a relatives greenhouse. If you see a product called Cheasapeake Blue (composted crab shells) it is great for tomatoes especially. After mixing it in the garden it has eliminated blossom end rot that often bothered the tomatoes. Love my homegrown tomatoes.

Of course we have a garden here. Nothing is better that Jersey Tomatoes and Jersey Sweet corn. I will also be starting two good sized Strawberry beds for my daughter to have a little fun with. Can't wait for summer.

Love to plant a vegatable garden, but gave it up two years ago after consecutive years of total destruction by deer.

The varmints have even eaten the foundation evergreens around the house.

Jinx

Ahoy jinx,...I had huge rabbit damage to our deco plants around deck. Got out the gun. Wrong approach

I found a super HOT pepper spray at Stein Garden. Has a waxy type base liquid to provide longevity for several weeks or better.

No critters have ever touched any plant that have the HOT Sauce applied. HeHeHe...... ;)

Yup almost time for me in N. CA., to plant tomato seeds, I usually get 3-400 cherry and Roma tomatoes - yum, I put bowl on fence, neighbor takes em and makes BEST freshest salsa I've ever had - lots of great spices! Put in salads and sauce too :)Did sweet corn too. Will try some other veggies this year too. Usuall late March is planting time for me. Heinz

Re: Any gardeners here?

I hate gardening but fresh corn, toms.,asp. strawberries, rhubarb, g. beans, pickels,...makes it worth the effort. When I first started the veg. patch my wife wanted enough tomatoes to can. I figgured 144 plants should be enough. I had a tom. jungle in august. after canning and the first frost the kids and I had a tom. fight with the soft (rotten) fruit. They were 4,5 years old and still remember that day, they got the old man real good. :D Cut worms and sandy soil

Re: Any gardeners here?

Guess I am a bit like the painter. Got the worst painted house in the street.
Produce around 130 doz- 200 doz herbs a week to retail chains, and around 2,000 - 4,000 potted annuals (in 10 cell packs), so our own gardens are the easy grow type, "everygreen shrubs" etc.We just never get the time.
BUT, my youngest is 10, and we have put together a hydroponic system for him, so he has a lot of grow bags he keeps corn, beans (runners), red beet, tomatoes, capsicum, cucumbers, zuchinni in. He puts his cos and fancy lettuce in my system. What we don't eat, he sells to the teachers at his school.
He likes to rise early in the morning, just after dawn, so he can get out and do some work in his gardens before breakfast.
Before I took on these crops I was a rose grower, and I can grow one mean rose.
So in reply to your Q Ladyfish, I am a gardener, and when I retire I want to have a big garden of Annuals and a large collection of Orchids.
Gardening is better than fishing. :D :D :D
Cheers
Phillip

NOTHING is better than fishing :D We have a small raised bed for a couple tomatoes, some sweet red peppers, and some zucchini. Last year with the new grandson we did'nt even think about planting until too late. First time in many years without some sort of garden :( . Won't happen again. Even if it's very humble there's nothing quite like pickin' your own ;)

Bigfun' I use egg shells to help controll cutworms, give it a try. Just break them up and turn them in! Seams they cut the cutworms.

Re: Any gardeners here?

I've had major deer problems as well, I ended up fencing my garden in 6' high. I've heard of using an electric fencer and tinfoil bowties full of peanut butter to shock the deer and hopefully scare them bad enough to not come back. We keep asparagus, rasberries, beans, peas, peppers, tomatoes, onions, etc. Always try something wierd each year too, last year it was 200 pound pumkins!

Aren't Wisconsin growing seasons fun? I'm on extremely sandy soil and deep in a river valley so I get late Spring and early Autumn frosts, everything in between is HOT. I've had the peppers growing under lights for six weeks now.
