Any idea what the lower unit from an 1956 Elto 22hp will fit?

I have an opportunity to pick up a seized 1956 Elto 22hp model 22D10E pretty cheap. The lower unit looks the same as a mid 50's J/E but I can't tell for sure. If it would fit any of my 18's or 25's it'd be great. Does anyone know what, if any, parts are interchangable with the J/E's? Thanks.

I don't know, but...that's a cool-looking engine. If I had it, I'd be asking which powerheads would bolt up and restore the Elto instead of moving the gearcase to a less interesting engine.

Betcha a 25 or 30hp big twin powerhead from the 50s would bolt right up. A fresh paint job and some new decals and you'd have a really cool engine for an old boat...one everyone doesn't have.

Just a thought...

Made in Canada, it is the same as the other U.S. Gale motors of the period. That means it is also the same as the 1955-56 25-30hp J/E. It would bolt up to the 1957 J/E 35 but the 35 had stronger bearings, so it wouldn't be reccommended.

Is it just a derated 25 then? Would the tiller fit on my '54 Johnson 25 then? I would assume so?

It was "derated" by a smaller bore size. Except for the cowling, and possibly the carburetor (??), everything else is the same.

They actually changed the block? Seems like a lot of work. Would have been easier to just change the carb. Oh well, thanks

That is a cool motor! Put a '55 25hp block on it and send it to me!
You think there's any chance of unsticking it?
I've never seen one of those. I didn't think any elto's were made in '55.
