I sorta like the looks of the new 4 door Wrangler.I don't care much for the Cherokee looking ones.

Got a big problem down-under with them.
This week TV Channel did an article on one that burst in to flames for no reason. Burnt completely out. Had footage of it too.
Jeep of course said it was a one-off, except.... Anitas girlfriend had a new one (top of the range) about 4yrs back, and it burst in to flames too, while she was driving; burnt to the ground.
Jeep replaced it with a new one, but had them sign a doc not to discuss the matter. She was out here last night and made comment she was aware of 1 other, not hear-say, but personally, that did the same thing. Owner got the fire out. She reckons Jeep have it down patt now....replace or repair on grounds of signing this no-speak doc.
Cheers

My dad has one. (1996) I really don't like it from a design standpoint. I am a bigger guy and it really isnt all that comfortable............especially if you are in the back.

I havent towed with it yet, though he has a hitch on it. The one think I do like is that it has good excelleration. That 4.0L inline 6 is a pretty solid motor.

I bought one brand new in '86. I loved it, but after 250 k mi, it was time to retire her. the 4.0 L engine was great.

I've got a 2000 G Cherokee now, with the same 4.0 L engine, with similar results. She's hardly even broke in, with only 100 k Miles.

It's not the look of it that is so attractive to me, but the whole package. I get worried when they start "improving" a proven drive train.

I have 2, '89 and '96.
They improved them a lot when they went to the different engine set-up.
The older ones had the eagle engines in them that were a bear when you had to change stats or had a water leak to get the air out or "burp" them.
Also have a '06 Wrangler with the 4.0L, you talking about screaming.:D
Tough to beat a Jeep.
I love the '06 GC with the V-8 also.
Plenty of power to tow with if need be.

The one big problem I had with the '86 Cherokee was somehow the soft plugs rusted out and started to leak. They cost about 50 cents apiece to replace, and about 22 hours of my labor to accomplish the task.

I had an 86 (AMC 2.5 4 cyl 285,000 miles), a 92 (170,000 4.0L six) and a 96, with the six. Three boys got too big for the backseat.

They are still popular and I bet there would be a grey market for those 07 models.

One little quirk was the vacuum reservoir behind the front bumper. When my a/c controls went out it took a loooong time to find that thing.

I've had three of them, and a grand cherokee. They're kinda ugly, but that's the point. It's a Jeep! ;) My '96 is at 217,000 miles and the most major repair is an alternator. Still purs like a kitten and regularly bounces off the rev limiter. :D Also gets 24mpg on the highway with oversized tires and the 4L.

(I drove through that river to park there!)

I must say though, you don't wanna crash test one...they weren't designed with that in mind. I still limp when I walk due to the lack of knee space....

I think you may be a little confused. That ugly *** thing with the round headlights called a Cherokee they still sell there isn't really a Jeep at all, it's a chrysler minivan. They quit making the Cherokee in 2001 outside of China, they still disgrace it's name in markets outside the US.

The Chinese Jeeps are cool, but they don't have the 4.0L, and how many products do you know that retain their good quality when manufacturing is shipped off to China?

The Wife had a 93 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.0, that thing was great. The only problem was the computer went out a few years ago. I shelled over a grand to fix it, and have since learned that there are three capacitors inside that burn out, and replacing those capacitors fixes the symptom (no fuely, no starty). In January she lost control on ice and hit a teleophone pole. Rig totalled, she walked away with a mild air bag abrasion. We bought a 96 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 5.2 V8, fully loaded. Thing was awesome until the wife was involved in a head-on collision on the highway. She walked away with seatbelt bruising and general soreness despite the fact that the front was so smashed in that the engine was pushing the firewall into the cabin. Sooooo, we bought a 97 Grand Cherokee, 5.2 V8, fully loaded with every option including factory suspension lift option. Three Jeeps in as many months, and I would buy another, they are very safe as I can attest to...

I assume, Jason, you no longer ride with her?

That's interesting about you '93 Grand Cherokee. I had a Canadian model '93 GC with a headlamp circuit that was on all the time when the car was in gear and running. All of a sudden, for no apparent reason, after 280 k miles, the headlamps decided to stay on all the time, no matter what--key on, key off, key out of the ignition, it didn't matter. The only way to turn them off was pull the fuse. Since there was other problems that were going to require big bucks to fix, I didn't want to spend a ton on the headlamp circuit, and sold the thing--cheap!

Never did find out what was wrong with them, and I was sure it was some $5.00 part. Problem was, I tend to spend thousands finding the correct $5.00 part to replace!

Yep, your $5 relay probably failed :D And it would likely have taken 5 minutes to fix :D :D

Those XJ Cherokees make very nice trail rigs. The unibody is quite light and there is a ton of aftermarket stuff for them.

93 was the intro year for that generation of the GC, and it was rife with electrical problems. It has a complex body control system that monitors the vehicle electrical system, but in fact just caused nothing but problems.

Most of the problems were fixed by the 96 model year, except one super fun problem, the dreaded Bad Coolant Sensor message on the System Display. It causes you to think that you are having issues with either the engine management temp sensor or the temp gauge sensor. It is, in fact, usually either the Coolant Resevior Level sensor is bad, there is a bad connection with that sensor, or there is a failed solder joint in the Display itself. All three GC's we have had have done this, and it has stressed the wife out to no end until I researched it and found this out. One of these days when I get bored I'll fix the problem. For now, as long as it drives I am happy.
