I have always had mercruisers and have been happy. The parts are easy to get,the motors are easy to work on and you dont need a marine mechanic for many things,a GM mechanic can do much of what you may need someday. They are also very reliable. The outdrives are also easy to learn to work on yourself. Not many bad i/o's within the past ten years. Some corrosion problems with Merc Bravo 3 drives, but generally people are happy with their Mercs and Volvos, both of which use GM engines.

Older OMC stringers and early Cobras had issues, as did some older 4 cylinder engines. But, if you get a sterndrive that's less then 10 years old, you can't go very wrong.
