Hello all.
I'm looking for some advice as how to proceed?
Working on a 1997 E50TLEUC (50 hp Evinrude).
The tilt and trim assembly doesn't work and the PO gave me a rebuilt assembly to go along with the motor. The motor is not on a boat yet but on a stand.
I have a manual that says I need a special tool to remove the top pin?

I've got a cheap slide hammer that's not too heavy. I can probably weld a bolt that will fit the pin to a nut that will fit the hammer as I don't have the proper adapter. Does anybody have any experience getting the pin out? Will it take a lot of force? Would I be better off buying or trying to rent a heavier tool?

Also: The bottom pin that runs through the transom mount and the tilt assembly seems to be stuck.

Do you just pound this pin out? Seems pretty fragile?
Any opinions / options for getting this pin out.

Soak them with PB Blaster or something similar, soak them some more, then soak them some more............ your slide hammer idea may work. If it's a saltwater motor, good luck, they're a b**** to get out. Heat may help, but getting the area hot enough to make a difference will ruin the paint.
I ended up cutting them with a cut-off wheel in an angle grinder between the cylinder and transom bracket, (not easy), and driving the stubs out of the bracket with an impact gun. Replaced the pins and plastic bushings. Check with a dealer to make sure they're still available, I think they are, and sit down before you ask the price.
Hope you can get yours out without destroying them, maybe others will chime in with other tips and tricks.

It's a freshwater motor.
Still trying to figure out an adapter for my slidehammer?
Thought I had with some adapters from a HF clutch alignment set. Wrong size.
Now I'm working on my welder. Wire feed switch decided to go haywire!!!!
Been spraying with liquid wrench. Trying to resist going animal. Hope we can resolve this peaceably?

Soaked, soaked, soaked, etc..........
Got the welder working. Made an adapter by welding two nuts together that threaded onto the slide hammer then welded a hex head bolt that fit the pin to the two nuts. (I'd post a picture but it's just too ugly - strong though)
Slammed the hammer until the stop broke then welded the stop to the hammer slide. Kept slammin.
Won't budge.
Put a big set of vice grips on the head and tried turning. Won't budge.

It's clear to me now why I got such a good deal on the motor.

Considering cutting the pins off but I can't find a listing for them in my parts manual nor anywhere online.
Any help?

Try shop.evinrude.com and look up your mtr. The pins are still available.

youl not get it out with a slide hammer unless its about 50 pound in weight.
you need a big 5 pound hammer and give it a proper wacking.
when they have got stuck they do take a lot of hitting to get moving.
why cut it when you will still have to wallop it out anyway ?
there is no substitue for a big hammer with this job.

i had the same with a friends 140 1977, it didnt want to budge, but the big hammer done the job just
as we were about to give up.

I looked up my motor on shop.evinrude.com and they list the bushings but not the Pins.
If you come across a part number(s), please pass on.

Thanks man. I was just about to give up. Your post gives me some hope.
I've got a big enough hammer but I've got to find a way to move the motor off the stand so I can have a good go at it?
I'm so close to getting this baby going; two pins and I'm home.
What did you use for a drift?

OK, (slapping head) I found the parts listing for the pins they were listed under Exhaust Housing & Stern & Swivel Brackets.
At least this gives me an option to cut them or if I screw them up too badly with the big hammer?
Top pin: 42.99
Bottom Pin: 68.99
If I need new pins I'll have at least $130 in the parts after shipping.
Wonder if the pros at the dealership have a magic way to get them out. I figure labor can't be much more than that?
Any opinions?

Take those sun glasses off. The upper pin is part #332435. Lower 332447. If you're going to beat on the pins only use brass drifts. Also use plenty of the "blue wrench".

The bracket around the pin. Don't heat the pin. You want to expand the metal around the pin. And don't forget the brass drifts. If you mushroom the pins out on the ends you're screwed.

Going to rest up a bit then go another round or two.
Have to move the motor to a safer location to use the blue wrench. I probably have 20 gal of expired 2cycle fuel (liquid boy scout) in the garage.

I hope my drift has enough brass in it, haven't used it in years. It looks a little golden.

Posting today to wrap up this thread.
Thanks to all who went blow for blow with me.
After 15 rounds the Evinrude 50 won by TKO.
Sometimes you got to "know when to fold em".

For anyone attempting this feat here's what I learned.
To get the top pin out you need to buy the Evinrude / Johnson slide hammer adapter.
It costs like $17.
You can borrow a five Lb slide hammer kit from Advanced Auto with a $158 deposit.
I couldn't get hold of the adapter so I spent an afternoon trying to make one by welding various bolts and nuts together.
My Hobart 140 couldn't penetrate the grade 5 bolts and nuts well enough to hold (I'm a p*** poor welder).
I was able to move the pin a little by welding some regular steel / zink bolts and nuts together but the bolts wouldn't take the force of the hammer and would break.
I believe the top pin would come out with the right adapter and the five pound hammer but I considered that I'd still have to get the bottom one out without ruining it for any of this to make sense?
After talking with an Evinrude dealer / mechanic it was reasonable to take it to the shop.
I hate loosing these battles and I'm feeling a bit defeated.
The good news is that my 30hp Suzuki which I intend to replace with the Evinrude is on it's best behavior.
A few more days on the water and if I could just start catching some fish, I should recover fully.

its funny you talk of the suzuki as the back up for yours
my 60 has given me trouble and the trusty 2 cylinder suzy 30hp is just waiting t o get put back on.
if my suzuki was a 50 then the evinrude 60 would be on ebay straight away.

ive spoken to some who had not liked the suzuki's but my engine is a 1983 and runs like a 2013 engine.
it starts straight away,idles fine, good top end for its power and uses little juice.

now im trying to think why i wanted to get the evinrude in the first place ? ive lost most of the summer through having
this 60hp juice drinking pig of an engine instead of my trusty old suzuki on the boat.

maybe once i get sorted ill be ok, but the suzuki gets my vote way over the omc stuff for totaly reliability.

I've been following your thread on syncing the 60.
The problem I have with the Suzuki is that nobody knows anything about them. I start a thread in the Suzuki forum and end up talking to myself. No dealer within 250 miles and even when I find one they don't seem very competent.
Parts are expensive and take forever to arrive, if you can find them. Shipping from BPM costs as much as the part (sometimes).
I figured I'd buy the Evinrude because the dealer network is more extensive, parts are more abundant and this forum is far more informative.

That being said: Just got a call from the (Evinrude) dealer and he told me it took them 3hrs to get my trim motor off and they found a broken wire in the trim harness that will need repaired. They didn't even get to tuning yet.

Must say that ever since the Evinrude arrived, my Suzuki has been running top notch. I can run all day on a 6 gal tank and it makes plenty of power. Pushes my fully loaded SeaNymph around 23 mph. which is plenty fast for me. Just not sure I can trust it for the long run.

Where to from here?
Yamaha maybe?
