Any tips for installing grommets in canvas

[Eric 3.7LX Alpha 1]

Working on a new top for the boat. Got about a third installed but in the kit I have there is a sort of punch to make the correct size hole for the grommet to be installed.

Only making the hole thru the canvas is a pretty tough adventure. I have been hitting the punch to create an outline and then finishing the hole with shears.

Any tricks to doing this easier? Or maybe a better tool to get the job done easier.

Ayuh,... My punch is sharp enough to cut, when beat against a block of softwood...
I've also just cut an X where the hole goes, then folded the flaps over to add bulk under the grommet...

If you have a file, stone or grinder you may could sharpen the edge of the punch. And use wood under the canvas to hammer on like already mentioned.

Gotta get this cover done, season not over yet. Got a fall Striped bass run yet!
