Well, I think I blew the torque converter in the explorer on Friday, darn it. Anyone know a quick way to tell if it was actually the converter? Symptoms: started to accelerate then a small odd noise, now will move but not much, it is almost as if the "clutch" is slipping big time if it was a manual. Engines I can fix, not a lot of experiences with transmissions, especially automatics.

What year is it?

Those transmissions are very bad about the solenoid packs going out. Also the gasket between the valve body blows out on the edge.

I have a 2002 that we tow with. It has 167,000 on the original trans. I have my fingers crossed every time we use it.

There is quite a bit of info on the net about them. Is it throwing any codes? It would be with the o/d light.

experianced trans tech of 6 years. only main problems with there trans that i know of are the valve bodies being ****. in order to find out if the torque converter took a **** or the pumo failed or valve body would be to check the trans for pressure. pull the supply line of the trans adapt a gauge unto the unit and check for pressure. either way your gonna want to do a complete overhaul. those units are super easy to rebuild even for a newbie. helps that you have some mechanical background. just a small help if your good with reading parts diagrams look up a company called WIT or whatever it takes. there a transmission part supply company that many transcompanies use. just a fyi i build and upgraded my 4l60e in my checy pickup for around 400 bucks plus 276.30 for my custom torque converter. there great to work with. but they have diagrams on there website of the trans torn apart showing parts. not detailed in anyways but it helps to find out what order the parts go in and what they look like. hope that helps.
