I am replacing a failed fuel pump on my 1992 5.7L Merc. It's a Carter type mechanical pump. I've read a few posts where ppls have trouble getting the pump arm in to align up with the lobe on the camshaft. Is there a "how to" video or illustrated diagram available? There may be detailed instructions with the pump, but I ordered online and delivery is 2 weeks hence. Thanks.

You can look at any video of a chevy 350 mechanical fuel pump. The only difference is in the pump itself.

Do you have any bolts in these holes?

On any Chevy V8. Pull old fuel pump, pick up plunger rod off the floor. Coat the plunger rod in grease to hold it in position while you get the new pump in place. Install new pump with new gasket. Connect fuel lines and go boating

One of the holes BT Doctur points out goes through to the pump rod. You can use a longer bolt to push against it and hold it in place as well. Just make sure to remove the bolt and use a shorter bolt with some sealer when you are done!

Thanks for the tips. I read about the longer bolt, but the photo will help me locate it. What do those bolts do... ie if there were no bolts would it mean it was a blind tapped hole?

no bolts mean the hole was not drilled thru to the fuel pump rod area. To remove the rod you need to remove the access plate first.
A lot easier to install is the motor is out of the boat too.
BUT if you remove the cover plate and rod, clean the area and rod with Brak-Kleen type product, coat the rod with some type of heavy grease, reinsert the rod, cover plate, and fuel pump before the rod drops down your in good shape.
