Older straight 6's were known to blow the top cylinder. Don't know if it was water or lubricant circulation, or both.

Re: Any1 know much about this engine?

That is an early 70's Merc, likely 70-74 vintage. A serial number will nail it down. The inline six is a very good motor, compact and about 1.5 HP/cu in and 3 pounds/HP, which is exceptional. That is the good news.

The bad news is that the motor is 35 years old. In addition, that motor had great midrange and top end power, but the bottom end power is a bit short, hence the need for the trim tabs. It would be best to get a compression check done and make sure it has spark. Check the condition of the gearcase oil and engine and boat wiring harness as well. Everything else is easily fixable.

#1 usually fails from overheating (cooling circuit malfunction).i.e. keep up the impeller maintenance and you should be fine....;)
