ANYBODY ever try to adapt a auto alternator to and outboard?

I have an alternator out of a small honda civic, and a spare suzuki dt75 that has a broken cover. I found a spot that i could attach this alt to run off flywheel pulley. I know i would have to modifiy the engine cover but i have a spare. just curious if anybody has ever tried. and why it would or wouldn't work?
