Troubleshooting a bad rectifier on a 1973 Johnson 65hp 3 cylinder, and seen this. It is located right in front of the rectifier. Seems to have a switch activated by the throttle linkage. There are no wires connected to it. Doesn't seem to affect the way engine performs. Just curious as to what it is and what it is used for.

The purple w/white stripe and purple w/yellow stripe wires go to the choke solenoid.

Second picture is of wire terminal block (think thats what you call it). Everything here looks in order except number 4. I don't have a purple w/green wire. Should I have one?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Errol (Basszilla4)

Re: Anybody know what this is?

If you look at the switch and linkage very closely you should notice that it is connected to the SHIFT linkage, not the throttle. The switch should be connected IN-LINE with the starter relay such that the starter will only work when in NEUTRAL to prevent accidental movement of the craft by starting the motor in gear.

The trigger wwire to the starter relay should connect to one side of the switch, the other side should go to the relay. Some models the switch is in-line with the ground wire of the relay. Either system works and the correction should be done.

Re: Anybody know what this is?

Don't know how or why, but I do know that when the throttle/engine is in gear, the motor will not start. Boat is new to me and this is the first season I have had it out. Was idling very slow and motor stalled. Not thinking I tried starting as it was when stalled. Nothing. Thought at first something was wrong until I switched back into neutral. Then started right up. Maybe there is some other safty switch somewhere else?

Thanks for the info CharlieB

It was redundant for motors with the remote control that had a neutral safety switch, so it was largely done away with on the larger motors in more recent models years beginning in 1974.
